From 1969 to 2000, scholarship on community participation foregrounded informal social processes as central to civic life. Researchers highlighted social networks, trust, and informal social control as the mechanisms linking neighborhood context to participation, while examining how inequality shapes access to engagement opportunities. Methodologically, cross-sectional surveys and early multilevel analyses enabled comparisons across communities, driving a shift toward quantitative assessment of participation beyond formal institutions.
